EcoBalance International School

EcoBalance 2018 will feature the EcoBalance International School for the second time in the long history of the conference. The School will start from 13:30 on October 9th, 2018 at the same venue as the main conference, and will provide two key introductory courses on life cycle assessment. After closing the lectures, the welcome party of the main conference will start. Registration is required to participate in the School, along with the choice of one course that you would like to join should be selected. Participation is free of charge.

Lecture 1: Resource scenarios to support circular economy policies

  • Time: 13:30-16:30
  • Lecturer: Prof. Ester van der Voet

After climate change, the next global level challenge is the resource challenge: providing the growing world economy with sufficient resources in a sustainable way. Another transition is needed next to the energy transition: the transition towards a circular economy. We need to move from the present, linear economy to an economy where resources are kept in use for as long as possible, thus reducing primary raw materials input.

To support such a transition at global scale, we need global level scenarios to explore circular economy policy options. Such scenarios do not as yet exist, so they have to be developed. The International Resource Panel has started up a scenario activity to do just that. This activity explores two starting points: a top-down approach using GE economic models together with an IOA model, and a bottom-up approach linking a stock-based resource module to the already existing climate scenarios. In this lecture, the two approaches will be explored.

Lecture 2: How to use LCA softwares?

  • Time and Lecturer:
13:30-14:30 MiLCA (JEMAI) by Dr.Yoriko Saeki 14:30-15:30 Gabi (thinkstep) by Mr. Masahiro Osumi and Dr. Martin Baitz 15:30-16:30 SimaPro (TCO2) by Mr. Koichi Shobatake

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a tool to quantify the environmental impact of a product through supply chains. LCA requires us to provide a lot of information such as production process, associated environmental emissions, and impact coefficient for each emission. LCA software helps us to analyze life cycle impact and complement incomplete information. In this class, LCA software experts of several companies show how to utilize LCA software and how the software helps your research. We cover MiLCA, GaBi, and SimaPro as the case studies of LCA software.

  • MiLCA (JEMAI): by Dr.Yoriko Saeki

Gabi (thinkstep): GaBi software is one of the most widely used LCA software in the world with powerful modeling functions and databases. In this session, thinkstep introduce overview of GaBi software, useful functions, add-on tools, and databases. Attendee can learn how to operate GaBi in practice and effective use of GaBi.

  • SimaPro (TCO2): Mr. Koichi Shobatake

SimaPro is the most widely accepted LCA software and used in over 80 countries around the world. It strongly supports LCA experts with its user-friendly intuitive interface, abundant analysis functions, LCI databases, and impact assessment methods. In the lecture, you will learn the most basic functions of SimaPro, and experience how to create processes and analyze them.
